Chiropractor's gluten-free research results in health food store

It's important to Mary McAndrews Hoffman that her patients understand why chiropractic works for them.

"I educate my patients," said McAndrews Hoffman, owner of Wellness From The Inside Out in Lake Zurich. The Barrington woman has been a chiropractor for about 9 years and has run her own business for more than three years.

She operates a complete wellness center that emphasizes taking a holistic approach. Services include sports performance, pregnancy care, massage therapy, personal training, meal planning, nutritional counseling and neuroimmunology.

A big attraction at the Lake Zurich practice is a gluten-free health food store that's connected to it.

The store grew out of McAndrews Hoffman's own need as a mom. When she found her oldest son had gluten intolerance, she had a difficult time finding healthy, tasty foods for him. She spent years researching the topic.

After learning about his diet, she also eliminated gluten from her diet and dropped 30 pounds and felt healthier.

Her shop, Green World Market, is filled with gluten-free foods that are healthy and do not contain preservatives, dyes or harmful additives.

The market features hundreds of items including vitamins, supplements, frozen items, drinks and canned foods. Staff runs the shop, but McAndrews Hoffman plays a role in the food selection.

McAndrews Hoffman's focus is chiropractic care. She spent six years studying various techniques and combines many of them, depending on what works for particular patients.

The business owner comes from a family involved with chiropractic and health care. Her grandfather was a chiropractor and her uncle served as president of Palmer Chiropractic College in Iowa.

Her mother was a nurse and her father served as an attorney representing the American Chiropractic Association for more than 20 years.

"I had it embedded in me," she said of the benefits of chiropractic care.

McAndrews Hoffman, who was always very nurturing, earned a literature degree in college. The Barrington native wanted to be a writer or teacher. She now teaches other chiropractors as well as her patients.

The 35-year-old business owner and husband, Bob, are raising three sons in Barrington: Tommy, 8, Peter, 7, and Grey, 4.

The practice features a play area for children.

The office is open six days a week. On Mondays and Wednesdays, it opens at 6 a.m. Three days a week it's open until 8 p.m.

In the fall, there are plans to expand the business to include more clinical and spa services.
