Construction accident knocks out power

More than 6,000 customers were without electricity for slightly more than two hours Saturday after a construction crew hit an underground ComEd line near Springfield Drive and Army Trail Road in Bloomingdale, authorities said.

The crew was tunneling under the street with an auger when the accident occurred, Bloomingdale Fire Battalion Chief Keith Boehne said.

The workmen hit a duct package containing several feeder lines, ComEd spokesman Luis Diaz-Perez said, knocking out power at 10:51 a.m. for 6,128 customers in parts of Bloomingdale, Bloomingdale Township, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights and Hanover Park. Electricity was restored to all customers by 1:10 p.m., Diaz-Perez said.
